Shipyards in Hampton Roads are soon going to face a very big problem – thousands of jobs left vacant by highly skilled tradesmen as they retire.

“We’re roughly estimating there’d be about 18,000 jobs by the end of the decade that need to be filled,” said Bill Crow, president of the Virginia Ship Repair Association, a Hampton Roads-based industry group.

More than 2,200 applications were received for the 209 positions open in Norfolk Naval Shipyard’s 2013 class of apprentices.

But finding workers who can pass security clearances and meet all of the other basic requirements for working in a local shipyard – and who are able and willing to learn the exacting technical skills needed to excel – isn’t so easy, Crow said.
