World trade without rules? US shuts down WTO appeals court
By JAMEY KEATEN and PAUL WISEMAN
December 9, 2019
GENEVA (AP) Global commerce will lose its ultimate umpire Tuesday, leaving countries unable to reach a final resolution of disputes at the World Trade Organization and instead facing what critics call the law of the jungle.
The United States, under a president who favors a go-it-alone approach to economics and diplomacy, appears to prefer it that way.
The terms of two of the last three judges on the WTOs appellate body neared their end at midnight Tuesday. Their departure will deprive the de facto Supreme Court of world trade of its ability to issue rulings.
Among the disputes left in limbo are seven cases that have been brought against Trumps decision last year to declare foreign steel and aluminum a threat to U.S. national security and to hit them with import taxes.

(10,072 posts)2. The WTO court was/is a "free" market, neoliberal court
They exclude environmental issues, (despite what the preamble says) labor abuse or small business. It was established in the midst of the"free" trade utopia movement in 1995.
It is just a court for corporations and nations. It's an extra special court just for the very rich. You and I are affected but can't bring complaints against corporations or nations for unfairly restricting our trade, our labor, or destroying our environment.
I'm not so sure its end is all that bad. But if it was processing complaints about our Psycho in Chief, he was bound to destroy it like his very short master in Russia wanted.
