2020 "Physically Distant" Edition: Welcome to the Economy Group!

Personally, I believe that "Social Distancing" is a misnomer. Especially, in the age of the ubiquitous cell phone and Internet. It is an unnecessarily isolating description of a physical activity meant to protect the population. In this particular case, it's intended to protect the population from the spread of a serious and life threatening disease.

I much prefer to call it, "Physical Distancing".

Even though we are all rightly being encouraged to maintain a reasonable physical distance from each other. There is no need to be socially distant in modern times.

In fact, I'd encourage a call, email, or text to someone who may be feeling anxiety, isolation, fear, confusion, uncertainty, and or dread during the current situation. Even a simple "Hello" can do wonders... for you both.

Make certain everyone around you knows they aren't alone and we're all going through this together.

You don't have to talk about the crises. Communicate about your common interests, shared memories, new memories, stories or my favorite... Talk about nothing. Just listening is an act of love beyond measure.

On to the business of the DU Economy Group.

This statement is as relevant as ever:

Our intention is that the group is welcoming to all, inclusive to differing points of view on topics covering national/international issues related to and affecting our personal and national economic well being.

It is great to see that in addition to the perennial SMW feature (many thanks to the maintainers and regular contributors to that feature) that there are many who come to the Economy Group to post articles and threads of interest. Thanks for those and please keep them coming!

Always remember to keep a place for those affected by natural and man-made disasters in your thoughts and actions.

To the right of the Blue "Post a Thread to this Group" button is a lighter blue button that says "About This Group"
Clicking on it will describe the host moderation functions and identify the current hosts of the group.

Social distancing is one of the recommended actions for people to take in order to slow the spread of coronavirus, forcing people to telecommute for work and spend more time at home. That means more and more people will be using their internet for anything from emailing and video conferencing to binge watching shows on a streaming service.

However, since not everyone at home has internet service, several internet providers and wireless companies have announced measures to offer free WiFi during the ongoing outbreak.

Comcast will be offering free service at its Xfinity hotspots for 60 days. The access points are mostly in public locations but some are in small businesses.

AT&T is also offering 60 days of free public service.

Spectrum is offering free public access at its hotspots and will not cut service to residential or small business customers who are unable to pay their bill because of coronavirus disruptions. Spectrum is also offering free broadband to households with students.

Verizon announced it would not charge late fees or disconnect accounts for an indefinite amount of time.

T-Mobile, Sprint, AT&T and Comcast are all lifting their unlimited data caps for cell phone subscribers for at least 60 days,

after 60 days is only $10/ month, no deposit, no credit card needed. It's fast enough to stream movies and play most games.

The gotcha is that you have to prove low income: food stamps, subsdized housing, medicaid or medicare, ssi or ssd.

I got my router and cables and was up and running in 3 days after I ordered.

I CANNOT BELIEVE that I'm pimping for Comcast, (ie the Evil Empire) But this is an exceptional deal for us poor folk.

Of course that means I've sold a fragment of my soul to them, but I'm used to that by now.

10 - 15G at a time.

I have kept up with my subscription, but, I'm on the lowest tier they offer.

Yeah, it's only a few extra shows or movies. It helps and I very much appreciate it.
