• Next week, investors will gain insights into how consumer demand is holding up as the omicron variant spreads.
• The first week of the year is a busy one with several important economic data points being released, including the Markit Manufacturing PMI, the JOLTS report for November, and consumer credit levels.

The new year is off to a busy start, with consumer-focused data on the agenda. This week we will be paying close attention to the Markit Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI). With the omicron variant of COVID-19 rapidly spreading, investors will want to know what impact it is having on demand for consumer goods. Consumer credit levels will also be released this week. The amount of credit consumers use to purchase goods has been declining, largely because of a lack of new vehicles for purchase.1 Also be on the lookout for the reports on job openings and labor turnover, mortgage applications and weekly jobless claims.
