Nurses union files federal lawsuit against Albany Med

The New York State Nurses Association has filed a federal lawsuit against Albany Medical Center, accusing the hospital of violating a federal human trafficking law.
The union, which represents the nurses at Albany Med, filed suit Tuesday in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York. A copy of the complaint was provided to the Business Review on Tuesday morning. The suit accuses the medical center of running a scheme to discourage nurses Albany Med hired from the Philippines from leaving before their three-year contract was up.
Albany Med's incoming CEO, Dr. Dennis McKenna, disputed the charges laid out in the complaint.
"We typically do not comment on pending litigation, but we feel compelled to respond and defend ourselves against NYSNA's outrageous allegations," McKenna said at a press conference Tuesday. "This is a groundless lawsuit being used to try to influence our negotiations for a nurses contract. That's what this is. But it's worse than that. It is a blatant mischaracterization of an excellent program, an excellent program, that has benefited 584 nurses and 13 med techs over the last 18 years."
