Seattle-area concrete workers strike grinding development to a halt

The strike by some 300 concrete Seattle-area concrete workers already is having "significant detrimental effect," according to affordable housing developers.

One of them, Community Roots Housing CEO Chris Persons, said if the strike drags on another two to three months "it could really be disastrous."

Eleven affordable housing projects with over 1,400 apartments are affected along with four Sound Transit light rail extension jobs, the multibillion-dollar expansion of Microsoft's headquarters, along with the many other projects that need concrete.

A resolution appears a long way off with the two sides deadlocked, lobbing angry words in correspondence whose recipients have included the heads of the city of Seattle, King County, Sound Transit and the state Department of Transportation.
