Speak up: What Can the AFL-CIO do better to address the needs of low wage workers?

Message from the AFL-CIO:

Fast food workers are demanding a liveable wage. Workers are rising up against Walmart. The tipped minimum wage has not been increased in decades and many restaurant workers live at the edge of poverty. Workplace tragedies are becoming all too common overseas and stateside.

This week Saru Jayaraman, co-founder and co-director of the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United and director of the Food Labor Research Center at the UC Berkeley, leads a discussion on raising expectations around wages and working conditions as the AFL-CIO continues its crucial conversation about the future of working people and of unions at www.aflcio2013.org.

She will be moderating the online discussion on Wednesday, June 12 from 2-3 p.m. EDT. Please join the conversation at www.aflcio2013.org and forward this announcement to your network. We need broad and diverse voices to help shape the future of working people.

We’ve held five wonderful discussions online to date and the ideas generated through these conversations will be considered by our executive council and shaped into recommendations for action at the AFL-CIO convention in September.

Please help us convene a robust discussion on this important topic and add your voice: www.aflcio2013.org.
