Suit alleges Allsup’s discriminates against pregnant employees
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has filed a complaint against Allsups Convenience Stores Inc., claiming the chain discriminated against pregnant employees.
The complaint lists six women who worked at stores in New Mexico and Texas, but says it was also filed on behalf of similarly aggrieved pregnant women in the two states. The New Mexico plaintiffs were employed in stores in Albuquerque, Ruidoso and Hobbs.
According to the complaint, all of the women had a similar experience. After informing Allsups of their pregnancy and/or requesting accommodations because of their condition, they were involuntarily placed on unpaid medical leave and then terminated. Accommodations included asking that they not be required to lift heavy boxes or that they be allowed regular breaks.
Several plaintiffs also say Allsups abruptly changed their work schedules, according to the complaint filed last month in U.S. District Court.
