UC Davis chancellor resigns following probe on ethical violations

Two starkly different portrayals of UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi emerged Tuesday after she resigned her post following the release of an independent report on whether she violated University of California rules on conflicts of interest and ethical conduct.
One image was Katehi as a strong and accomplished public servant, cleared of all charges in a bruising and unfair investigation, who “fought for her integrity and won,” in the words of her attorney, Melinda Guzman.

The other was Katehi as a deeply flawed administrator whom investigators found had shown poor judgment, violated multiple university policies and misled, even lied, to her superiors, the public and the media, according to UC President Janet Napolitano.

The 102-page report by a team of outside investigator led by Melissa Haag, In a 102-page report, investigators led by Melinda Haag, a former U.S. attorney, found Katehi was not involved in employment or compensation decisions about her family members. Investigators also concluded Katehi had not misused student fees.
But her assertions that she played no role in the social media contracts were ““misleading at best and untruthful at worst,” the report found. Katehi also misinformed Napolitano about her paid board service with a controversial for-profit firm, among other findings.
