My father used to pay me $1 for every "A" I got on my report card.

While I didn't get straight "A's," I made out OK.

But it wasn't the B.F. Skinner conditioning that he intended (positive reinforcement).

I got the grades because 1) I was interested and paying attention, 2) I had/have a great memory, 3) I did my homework regularly, and 4) I took great tests. It had nothing at all to do with the money. If anything, I thought the money thing demeaned my educational experience.

Don't get me wrong: I KEPT THE MONEY!

$1 per A and 50 Cents per B starting in 3rd grade He died when our youngest sister was 4 so she did not get the benefit; she would have raked it in too.

My mom did not like it but he did it anyway ( besides she was never very good at telling her father No) He told her it was his way of letting us know how proud he was of his girls

I was just like you, and I made good grades for the same reasons. His gift was nice, and I appreciated it but it was my dad's relatives who put the pressure on. Little things like "no one in our family ever failed a class" "Your daddy and Aunt Ruby always had straight A report cards." implying that I did not meet their standards My mom hated that too but they never stopped.

Every time they slacked off I brought out my Caddyshack quote.

"The world needs ditchdiggers too."

With my younger daughter, we would get a Godfather's pizza with shrimp after a big test.

Just kidding. I wouldn't say I rewarded on performance, but on effort. I was very active in their education, and with their hard work they each finished college in two years.
