Missouri legislators to vote on expanding access to virtual education
JEFFERSON CITY — Legislators in both chambers of the Missouri General Assembly are set to vote upon two nearly-identical bills designed to expand access to virtual education.
Under Missouri law, students opting for an online education need approval from their school district to make the transition, meaning that schools, rather than parents, could have the final say in a child's online education.
"The parent has a good amount of knowledge to share about what works with their student," Ade Pious, a Jefferson City mother of two virtual students, said. "Then I think it's only fair that we should put it in the responsibility of the parents."
The two bills, House Bill 1903 and Senate Bill 648, are on the informal calendars for each chamber. Senate Floor Majority Leader Caleb Rowden (R), sponsor of SB648, told KRCG 13 his bill could be voted on as soon as next week.
