without representation.
It seems that the current rush to privatize schools is a form of coercing money with no possibility of controlling how it is spent. Didn't we once fight a Revolution over such a premise?

(48,181 posts)Oversight of spending is irrelevant. You have representatives elected by the people making these bad decisions.
Unelect them.

(826 posts)privatization begins there is no un-election that will change the policies of the owning body. They own the schools and the teaching curriculum and set all the parameters of attainment. Sure the other structures may remain in place but they are entities without purpose or power. That is why I said that it is taxation without representation.

(48,181 posts)what you are discussing is "funding without oversight". I actually do not think that is being done, as in the schools receiving funds do have to comply with state standards, (not that I support this at all as it is a violation of the separation of church and state to fund religious schools.) At any rate, once done it can be undone, by your representatives, so again - where is the lack of representation?

(130,732 posts)ACTUAL taxation without representation exists in Washington, DC, where we have NO voting representation in Congress, House or Senate.
a big if..the citizens of this country voted at the rate of other countries (60-85%) many things would change. And another big if..the need to constantly campaign and raise funds were removed we would see many more changes. Prostitutes cannot choose their Johns and politicians have only a little room to choose their benefactors. Absent them and the need for them we would re-balance our political society.
