United States: Boy held for 'killing pet dinosaur' (BBC) {or, that's what he wrote ...}

A high-school student in the US state of South Carolina has been arrested and suspended from school over a writing assignment in which he claimed to have killed his neighbour's pet dinosaur, it's been reported.

Alex Stone, 16, says he was told to write something in the style of a Facebook status update for a project at Summerville High School. But when he allegedly wrote: "I killed my neighbor's pet dinosaur. I bought the gun to take care of the business," worried teachers called the police, local news station WCSC reports. Officials questioned Stone and searched his schoolbag and locker but didn't find any weapons. But police say the boy was difficult during questioning, and he was arrested and charged with disturbing the school, the SF Gate website says. Stone was also suspended for a week.

The boy's mother, Karen Gray, says she thinks the school overreacted. "I could understand if they made him rewrite it," she says in an interview with NY Daily News, adding the school didn't call her to explain what was happening. Meanwhile, her son says he's frustrated and would prefer to be home-schooled from now on. "I regret it because they put it on my record, but I don't see the harm in it," he says.

I actually see this as a fairly dumb assignment. What if you don't ever have anything to do with Facebook, and have no idea what the style is ? Or just don't like Facebook and don't want to waste time on anything connected with it (I don't) ?

1. I know a teacher who does an assignment like this

Students in groups create facebook accounts for related historical figures and then interact in those roles. "One small step for man #yolo" and she says other than the alarmingly number of students who want to be Hitler... it goes pretty well.

2. Shit like this has to be taken seriously.

On my visit to the creation museum, I saw Little Cain and he is riding his pet dino with the cutest little saddle. It brought tears of joy to my eyes, recalling when I had my pet chicken, Foghorn. I would have been pretty upset if I knew someone kilted Mr. Leghorn.

He finally did die and my Daddy said it was because he stopped making eggs but I never did see his body so I could bury him. I wonder if Cain's dino stopped laying eggs.

Now suppose I had a pet dino like Cain did. If someone kilted him, I would be sad. People gotta stop killing other peoples' pets, even if they are just dinoes.

Thats all I know.
