Historic Pioneer Cabin Tree toppled in California storm - SF Gate

The historic Pioneer Cabin Tree, a former "drive-through" giant sequoia in Calaveras Big Trees State Park in Calaveras County, was felled in California's weekend storms.

The tree was hollowed out in the 1880s to allow tourists to pass through it, and even allowed cars, but more recently has hosted only hikers. It was part of the "Big Trees Trail" at the state park.

Joan Allday, wife of Jim Allday and also a volunteer at the park, said the tree had been weakening and leaning severely to one side for several years. - SF GATE

There was no immediate confirmation of the tree’s age. Many in the park were more than 1,000 years old, and sequoias can live more than 3,000 years, according to the National Park Service.

The Pioneer Cabin tree was one of several “tunnel trees” that had been carved out and served as human amusements. The Wawona tree, in the Mariposa Grove at Yosemite National Park, was cut open in 1881. It fell down during a winter storm in 1969 and has been known as the Fallen Tunnel Tree since then. It was more than 2,000 years old when it fell, the park service said. - NYT

I suppose we should carve out two more trees for our amusement. Oh wait. There aren't any more giant sequoias to hollow out.

And now we have the idiot in-chief coming into office, solely on a technicality in our election rules! Is there any light in our future?

Redwood National Park Expansion Bill Statement on Signing H.R. 3813 Into Law.

March 27, 1978

I take great pleasure today in signing into law H.R. 3813, which expands the boundaries of the Redwood National Park in California. Enactment of this bill implements one of the recommendations in the environmental message I sent to Congress last year.

This act will permit more people to visit the magnificent groves along Redwood Creek that contain the world's tallest trees and will ensure that those trees are adequately protected. The existing park will be nearly doubled in size by the addition of 48,000 acres of land. Some of the land to be acquired has been damaged by logging operations, and this bill will enable the Secretary of the Interior to restore it to as close to its natural state as possible.

Sadly, in the days before the legislation was signed, the loggers cut down as many trees as they could…
