Wind covers 43.6% of Denmark's 2017 power demand January 4 (Renewables Now)
Wind turbines supplied 43.6% of Denmarks power demand last year, according to the Danish Energy Association (DEA).
Preliminary data from the Danish transmission system operator Energinet, published by DEA on Wednesday, show that wind farms in the country generated 14,700 GWh of electricity in the past 12 months, setting a new production record.
The previous record was achieved in 2015, when wind power met 42% of Denmarks power consumption. This share is expected to reach 50% by 2020, while renewables are seen to supply 80% of the countrys overall electricity consumption by the same year.
DEA noted that Denmarks installed wind power capacity has doubled since 2001 although the actual number of turbines has dropped by 20% due to the use of larger and more efficient machines. At present, the countrys installed onshore and offshore wind power capacity stands at 5.3 GW.
