Nashville public schools officials are adamant the district has taken steps to mitigate lead in its drinking water after a top-level administrator was recorded suggesting the district bypass water filters.
Dennis Neal, executive director of maintenance, was placed on administrative leave with pay on Monday pending an investigation into the secret recording, according to a district spokeswoman. The audio was obtained and first reported by WTVF NewsChannel 5.
"The full recording hasnt been shared with us. The parts that we do hear are him speaking to his staff (about) bypassing the filters in the bottle fillers," spokeswoman Michelle Michaud said. "We dont condone anyone trying to bypass the filters or fool the public."
The recording has incensed parents throughout the district and spurred Mayor David Briley to announce he will do whatever possible to ensure students aren't exposed to dangerous levels of lead in drinking water. I'm going to make sure that we are doing everything we possibly can, without regard to the cost of a $75 filter, to make sure our children have safe drinking water in every Metro school," he said in a statement to The Tennessean.
