Highest Temp On Record For Scotland Confirmed; 91.7F On 6/28 Near Glascow

The highest temperature ever recorded in Scotland was set last week. The town of Motherwell, located on the outskirts of Glasgow in central Scotland, topped 91.7 degrees (or 33.2˚C) on Jun. 28, according to the United Kingdom Met Office.

The previous record had stood since August 2003 in Greycrook, Scotland when they reached 91.2˚F (or 32.9˚C).

All four nations that make up the United Kingdom soared into the upper 80s or low 90s (above 30˚C). Ireland also recorded its highest June temperature in more than 40 years, according to Met Eireann, Ireland's meteorological service.

The heat is blamed on a large area of high pressure that sat between Scotland and Iceland with sinking, warm air for much of June. The high pressure system and associated heat wave also brought some of the driest weather ever recorded. Much of Ireland and the United Kingdom are entering droughts.

Unfortunately in this particular instance we have evidence that a stationary vehicle with its engine running was parked too close to the observing enclosure and the Stevenson screen housing the thermometers during the afternoon of 28th June. Although the measurement appears plausible given the weather conditions that day we cannot rule-out the potential for contamination of the measurement by this non-weather-related factor.
