Independence Day Rain Totals Hit Nearly 10" In Harris County; San Jacinto Above Flood Stage
HOUSTON - What was anticipated to only be a few inches of rainfall in the Houston area Wednesday turned in to nearly 10 inches in some areas throughout Harris County. The high rain totals caused highways, residential roads, concert venues and recently renovated dog parks to close.
West Fork of the San Jacinto River rose above flood stage and is expected to rise another half-foot Wednesday night into Thursday morning, according to meterologist Jeff Lindner with the Harris County Flood Control District.
Highways that were largely impacted included U.S. 59, I-10, 610, Westpark tollway, Highway 288, Katy Freeway and others. Standing water on the roadways caused issues for motorists attempting to cross, flooding vehicles and stranding them in streets.
EDIT
On Thursday, were warming back into the low 90s and once again more afternoon showers and thunderstorms will start to move in as we get to the hottest part of the day (2-5pm), KPRC Meteorologist Justin Stapleton said. Im not expecting it to be a repeat of today but some storms could drop some heavy isolated downpours once again, he said. The pattern stays wet overall in the afternoon for the rest of the holiday week into the weekend as little storms will move through the Gulf coast states.
