My grandmother was a kid back in 1912. She told me that back then girls had two choices, become a teacher or a nurse. She became a teacher - and a good one, but she told me that if she was starting out today, she'd become an environmentalist - I've never forgotten that.

changed careers and chose teaching...BIG mistake. It almost killed me. I wish I had been an environmentalist instead too.

But she did have a second "career," worked for the Office of Price Administration during WWII. My grandfather died suddenly in 1940, leaving her with 4 young kids, so she went back to work. I try my best to be more like my grandmother - she was always optimistic and always looked ahead and did her best to keep up with whatever was going on in the world.
