Not a single G20 country is in line with the Paris Agreement on climate, analysis shows

And yet we claim that we still can keep global warming at a mere 2 C:

None of the world's major economies -- including the entire G20 -- have a climate plan that meets their obligations under the 2015 Paris Agreement, according to an analysis published Wednesday, despite scientists' warning that deep cuts to greenhouse gas emissions are needed now.

The watchdog Climate Action Tracker (CAT) analyzed the policies of 36 countries, as well as the 27-nation European Union, and found that all major economies were off track to contain global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The countries together make up 80% of the world's emissions.

The analysis also included some low-emissions countries, and found that the Gambia was the only nation among all 37 to be "1.5 compatible." As the study only included a few smaller emitters, it's possible there are other developing countries in the world on track as well.

Under the 2015 Paris accord, more than 190 countries agreed to limit the increase in global temperatures to well below 2 degrees above pre-industrial temperatures -- ideally to 1.5 degrees. Scientists have said 2 degrees is a critical threshold for some of the Earth's ecosystems, and is one that would also trigger more catastrophic extreme weather events.

The report comes less than two months ahead of UN-brokered international climate talks in Glasgow, known as COP26. The event's president, British MP Alok Sharma, has said he hopes to "keep 1.5 alive" as a global warming limit.

I wish I was wrong and that by some miracle politicians would do what is necessary, but they won't. Corporations are pulling the strings and continued corporate profits depend on cause even more environmental destruction. Capitalism is the problem, but since Capitalism is the most scared of all sacred cows, criticizing it, let alone ending it, will never be tolerated. Thus, industrial civilization is doomed.

Mankind might survive, but probably only in small, pre-industrial groups.

And forgot to post it, so thank you!!

Why do folks ignore this MOST important info??

Is it religion? "God will take care of us" & the old "how did WE cause it?" to quote my late rethugian mother.

They may claim they're just too busy to read the info but that excuse is just hog feces!

Why do people JUST NOT CARE?? Global warming is going to end us all!

I so often become overwhelmed.

I have no idea why this didn't get better coverage. It's huge! But I for one was not surprised in the least. Bottom line, we have done little other than mouth platitudes and then proceed with business as usual. Jim Hansen was furious while Michael Mann had a calmer, we-will-persevere type of response. Mann works very hard to maintain a certain level of optimism. I don't see how he does it. I tend to respond the same way Hansen does. He's been in this thing since the beginning and knows all too well how difficult it is to get people to really pay attention.

It's going to get very bad and stay that way for a very long time before it ever gets "better" - whatever "better" may be defined as in some distant future that we can barely imagine.

...complacent and oblivious.

The "by 2050" or by "such and such" a date always refers to the reactionary so called "renewable energy" nirvana that did not come, is not here, and won't come.

They see lots of ads about electric cars and wind turbines, have no idea about how these things are manufactured or how long they last and they just plug along happily.

If they think they care, they cruise to websites and watch poorly disguised ads for Tesla cars and Ford electric trucks.

It's not like there will be hell to pay. There is hell to pay, and the payments will get larger and larger.

In the minds of these people, even though nuclear energy is "too dangerous," climate change isn't, air pollution isn't, and the bodies continue to pile up while they repeat these mantras with every more criminal disinterest.
