Compared to the average human my wife and I are sitting on a huge hoard of copper in the plumbing and wiring of our home, and in our cars.

People are scared of residential aluminum wiring after the deadly fiasco of the early 'sixties but that's a technical problem that's largely been solved. We should probably look at the environmental impacts of copper vs. aluminium mining. One kilogram of aluminum can replace two kilograms of copper in electrical wiring which is why it's used for electrical distribution up to the main circuit breaker in homes and small businesses.

Modern plastics such as PEX are frequently used instead of copper.

I believe every human, nearing eight billion of us, deserves indoor plumbing and electricity. Maybe we shouldn't be using copper to accomplish that.
