Related: About this forumThe Coldest April in the Satellite Record over the Pacific Northwest
You knew it was colder than normal over the Pacific Northwest during April.
But the cold was not limited to the surface. Let me show you the chilly story in a very new way: using satellite temperature soundings in the vertical.
By measuring infrared or microwave radiation emitted by the atmosphere, satellites can measure how temperature varies in the vertical. Not unlike how infrared ear thermometers work by sensing the radiation emitted by your eardrum!

I can attest to this here in Victoria, BC. We were about 4c lower than normal for most of the month and May hasn't gotten any better.

(27,803 posts)We go between Seattle and the San Juan Islands and it's been a pretty miserable spring. I had to wear gloves yesterday.

(7,281 posts)And I can attest to the coldest April, and now 9 days into day almost every single day has been been bone chilling colder than any other Spring month I can remember. Yesterday our highs was 57 F. with bone chilling winds up to about 25+ mph.
Dressed like it's January. I've lived here in Sonoma County for over 50 years. Never can I remember a single day in May being this cold.

(86,569 posts)My area, SW Montana, it's been more like I remember it back in the 70s and 80s. Not as much snow but we used to get snow even in June. We got about 6" this morning but it will be gone by noon. The good part is that our snow pack in the mountains is accumulating more snow which is great because we are in a drought, this will help some. I hope it rains sporadically throughout the summer to help make up for the snowpack shortage.
