Researchers claim to have built Europe's first 'zero-emission' house powered by hydrogen

Researchers claim to have built Europe's first 'zero-emission' house powered by hydrogen

The hydrogen-powered fuel cells generate the electricity and heating required to meet the building's needs.

This solution was developed by scientists at the University of Sannio in southern Italy in collaboration with private companies, Euronews reported on Thursday.

"Lately, we have focussed on the issue of CO2 emissions in the environment and worked on the idea of using hydrogen to make this house a completely self-sufficient system," Gerardo Canfora, the dean of the University of Sannio, told Euronews...

..."Hydrogen can be a game changer for Europe. It is key in diversifying our energy sources and helping us reduce our dependency on Russian gas. We need to bring this niche market to scale," he said.

"That is why we are creating a Hydrogen Bank. And we will also increase our financial participation in Important Projects of Common European Interest. This will help enabling breakthrough innovation and positive spill-overs for all of the EU economy and help power the economy of the future," he added....more

New Jersey resident Mike Strizki built the first US Solar Hydrogen house in 2006

"The ability to make your own fuel is priceless," says the man known as "Mr. Gadget" to his friends. He boasts a collection of hydrogen-powered and electric vehicles, including a hydrogen-run lawn mower and car (the Sable, which he redesigned and named the "Genesis" ) as well as an electric racing boat, and even an electric motorcycle. "All the technology is off-the-shelf. All I'm doing is putting them together."

2. Rather than ban gas heaters, convert them to H2

The existing natural gas equipment and pipelines can be converted to run on clean H2 (just like most existing internal combustion engines)

Then all that gear and labor won't go to waste

Why hydrogen boilers?
For the heating and hot water industry, removing carbon entirely is a complex matter, largely because of the existing infrastructure, where the majority of UK homes use natural gas for heating.

Yet, with a third of UK greenhouse gases coming from our homes, it is quite clear that the UK will not meet its climate change targets without a change in home heating technology and fuel.

Replacing natural gas boilers with hydrogen gas may be the simplest solution to the nation’s heating problems. The only by-product of burning hydrogen gas is water, meaning that it is a carbon free fuel source and could be a key method to help decarbonise heating and hot water in UK homes.
