EU to introduce 95g CO2/km limit by 2020 and bring it even lower to push manufacturers to make hybrid cars mainstream

Carmakers will have to slash the carbon emissions of new cars sold in Europe by a third by 2020, according to leaked European Commission documents seen by the Guardian.

The EC proposals would be legally binding and the document plans for even stricter emissions targets for 2025 and 2030, which could only be met if hybrid or electric vehicles become mainstream.

Greg Archer, of campaign group Transport & Environment, said: "Tighter CO2 standards for cars will be welcomed by drivers across Europe who will save €500 per year at the petrol pump on average if this proposal is adopted."

But car manufacturers warned that tough regulation could harm an industry already struggling with the economic crisis and foreign competition.

For reference, that's about 57 miles per US gallon muriel_volestrangler Jun 2012 #1
How did you convert CO2 emmissions to mpg ? dipsydoodle Jun 2012 #2

Scroll down and select 'starting unit' and 'destination unit'. I should have pasted the link you get with the correct ones chosen:

Any relationship between those two is loose may just be a guide. Otherwise manufacturers' cars with identical CO2 ratings would provide identical mpg figures : that doesn't happen.

My Jeep Unlimited 2.8 CRD [diesel] is 268 g/Km and the figure for that comes out understated @ c. 28 mpg Imperial.

(reasonable, for an engine and catalytic converter in good working order), then it's a straight calculation, given the fuel, eg:

http://www.eta.co.uk/2010/02/22/calculating-car%E2%80%99s-co2-emissions-its-mpg

Where did you get the 'official' mpg figure for your Jeep? Was it the same scenario as the CO2 emissions test?
