Leatherback Nest Found on Panama City Beach (WJHG)

Posted: Wed 5:24 PM, Jun 20, 2012 Updated: Thu 8:28 AM, Jun 21, 2012

A leatherback sea turtle nest was found on Panama City Beach Tuesday night. It was the first leatherback nest ever recorded on the beach. The tracks are destroyed and the nest looks just like the other ones. There is no way to tell in a picture that it is leatherback nest. The nest is located near Grand Panama.

Flash photography is prohibited and Turtle Watch members are asking beach goers to use caution in the area.

Maybe a hopeful sign -- leatherbacks moving into areas where they were not previously found (or returning to areas where they had been driven out ?). A similar story from last year and farther west: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=115x119564
