I tore across Southern Michigan leaving all kinds of destruction. What I will never forget is the dark green pea color of the sky just before it hit.

But I certainly remember the July 7, 1991 derecho event in Michigan:

http://www.spc.noaa.gov/misc/AbtDerechos/casepages/jul7-81991page.htm

We lost a couple of big trees and shingles. Neighborhoods all around us were without power for up to two weeks, we were a little pocked that did not lose power. And, after the storm, the next week was hot and humid. A lot of people were very upset with the utility for poor line clearance. Of course, the promised to do better in the future.

The scenario has repeated several more times, with widespread outages due to improper line maintenance and tree clearance, with the utility promising to do better in the future.
