VAST SHOALS of cod have been found under the Arctic ice cap by scientists exploring the north polar waters left open by receding sea ice.
They have found aggregations of billions of fish feeding over the continental slope, where the sea bed slopes down from the land towards the North Pole. Such areas used to be covered in year-round ice but are opening up as climate change warms the Arctic.
The fish are Arctic cod, a separate species from the larger Atlantic cod familiar to British consumers.
Researchers believe that they are one of the Arctics most important species as the main prey of whales such as belugas and narwhals and of the ringed seal, which, in turn, is a staple food for polar bears.
