Hong Kong Vows Tough Action To Clean Air Blahblah Removing Polluting Blahblah "Not Voluntary" Blah
HONG KONG : The Hong Kong government has said it will take a tough stance against pollution, by clearing old commercial vehicles off the roads. It will also soon propose new air quality objectives to lawmakers and aims to implement them in 2014.
Hong Kong is keen to bill itself as "Asia's World City", attracting professional talent from around the globe. But persistent pollution often clouds that image, with many worried that it is hurting Hong Kong's competitiveness.
While factory emissions from across the border have been singled out as a contributor, street level pollution is also to blame.
Hong Kong's air quality has become significantly worse over the past decade. Over the past five years or so, Hong Kong University estimates that more than 3,000 avoidable deaths per year were caused by air pollution.
