Reward offered for info on endangered red wolves shot dead in North Carolina

Another protected red wolf has been killed in Eastern Carolina by a suspected gunshot wound. It is the second one this year.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says the latest death happened last Tuesday, southwest of Creswell in Washington County. Authorities are asking for the public's help in tracking down those responsible.

The red wolf is an endangered species, and is protected under federal law. FWS says regulations do allow landowners to kill a red wolf that attacks their livestock or pets, but it must be reported to federal or state wildlife agents within 24 hours.

Last year, 14 wild red wolves were killed in the state, three that were struck by vehicles.

The feds continue to offer a $2500 reward for information that leads to the prosecution in a red wolf death.
