Nuclear power proposal for Alberta withdrawn by companyBy Nicki Thomas and Elise Stolte, edmontonjournal.com December 12, 2011 9:06 PM
EDMONTON - Bruce Power has abandoned plans to build a nuclear power plant in northern Alberta, the Ontario-based energy company announced Monday.
The company had proposed building up to four nuclear reactors that could produce 4,000 megawatts of electricity at a site 30 kilometres north of Peace River. The option had been under consideration since 2007 and the project appeared to be moving along, with the company conducting an environmental assessment last year.
A statement from the company gave little explanation for the decision, other than a renewed focus on its existing nuclear facility in Ontario.
Weve decided the new nuclear option in Alberta is not something our company will be progressing further, Duncan Hawthorne, Bruce Powers president and CEO, said in a news release. Id like to thank the many people in Peace Country who stood with us to investigate an option for Albertas energy future and for welcoming us into your community. Not that I'm fan or an expert of Nuclear, but transparency on the part of government has become a thing of the past. Oddly the edmontonjournal link wouldn't open for me, so maybe Big OIL got to them first! Ok, I'll take my tinfoil hat off now.

As for "big oil", no that isn't it at all. First, they lowballed the price; they would have never been able to deliver for the numbers they claimed. Since they couldn't talk the government into committing to the project they had to give it up since the economics just don't work in a world moving inexorably towards ever cheaper renewables. The government wants to spend the money they have on transmission to enable wind.

Stupid archaic technology that produces copious amounts of nuclear waste.
