Sahara Forest Project

There were a couple of articles on DU about this in 2008/09 when it was in the concept stage. The first pilot plant went into operation in Qatar in December 2012 with production of 290,000 cucumbers grown in the first 10 months in their 600 sq m greenhouse. They don't give a cost for the facility (and I'm assuming it's fairly high as it is a pilot plant), but I would think economies of scale would result from large scale expansion. In June of this year, agreements were signed with Jordan and Norway to create similar launch station in Jordan. Interesting development towards food security in desert nations. A lot of information at the link.
