New Jersey Gov. Murphy announces commitment of $190M for Newark Penn Station renovation

BY DOUGLAS CLARK | DECEMBER 10, 2020 | INVESTMENT

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy announced today the state’s commitment of $190 million in state funds for the renovation and upgrade of Newark Penn Station.

The work is scheduled to begin immediately with $30 million of the funds being allocated, with the initial scope involving the restoration of the classic benches in the waiting room, installation of brighter lighting, updating of the bathrooms, improved HVAC and air-handling, fresh paint and tile, and a deep clean of the limestone exterior to once again showcase the architecturally significant façade.

Additional upgrades are slated over the next five years totaling $160 million, officials said.

Officials noted Newark Penn Station is the seventh busiest rail station in North America and one of the busiest stations in the region – served by NJ TRANSIT commuter trains, the Newark Light Rail, the PAT, and Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor services.

The trains use tunnels which are 120 and 110 years old. About 20% of national GDP is tied to the NYC area. If a tunnel collapses it could cost us trillions in lost output.
