drew...and exposed:

The large ball is the amount of ocean water compared to the earth, the little one is the amount of fresh water on land and in the atmosphere and locked in the ground. The smallest blue ball, you can just see it, is the fresh water available to plants and animals.

Earth is an arid planet.

http://water.usgs.gov/edu/earthhowmuch.html

"The Earth is a watery place. But just how much water exists on, in, and above our planet? About 71 percent of the Earth's surface is water-covered, and the oceans hold about 96.5 percent of all Earth's water. Water also exists in the air as water vapor, in rivers and lakes, in icecaps and glaciers, in the ground as soil moisture and in aquifers, and even in you and your dog."

..........

"Do you notice the "tiny" bubble over Atlanta, Georgia? That one represents fresh water in all the lakes and rivers on the planet. Most of the water people and life on earth need every day comes from these surface-water sources. The volume of this sphere is about 22,339 mi3 (93,113 km3). The diameter of this sphere is about 34.9 miles (56.2 kilometers). Yes, Lake Michigan looks way bigger than this sphere, but you have to try to imagine a bubble almost 35 miles high—whereas the average depth of Lake Michigan is less than 300 feet (91 meters)."

lakes 200 feet deep are ponds. The amount of potable, useable fresh water is frighteningly small.

Same with the thickness of the atmosphere and the amount of breathable air....the atmosphere as viewed from space as a whole is barely a wisp.

at the number of people on DU that take the ignorant, immature "you can't tell me what to do" stance when the facts about the calamitous effects of commercial meat production are brought up for discussion

Almost.

Sometimes you have to double-check the URL, right?

Sorry for the ugliness, sweetie. I posted a couple times on that thread.

any time vegetarianism or veganism is brought up in GD.

I need to remember the next time I see such a thread to point out to those steak-lovers that their meat is either flavorless or mostly so. It has to be marinated, basted, sauced, and or otherwise processed to make it flavorful. And the majority of those added flavors come from plants (and sometimes fungus.)

They just gotta have that dead flesh on their plate.

FWIW, I never EVER say anything like that to carnivores because no one likes to be told how to eat and snark might actually provoke them & move them in the wrong direction.

Be as positive as you can and then let it go. At some point you will probably get at least one person to give up one serving of meat, and it's worth it for the one life that could be saved. IMHO.

I'm sorry. Thanks for trying and don't give up. I'm happy to join in the convo if you want backup.
