US urges Latin American leaders to isolate Venezuela

LIMA, Peru — US vice president, Mike Pence, who replaced President Donald Trump at the Summit of the Americas held over the weekend in Lima, Peru, urged Latin American leaders to “isolate” Venezuela and by extension, its embattled President, Nicholas Maduro and his regime, in an attempt to usher in change for the people of Venezuela amidst a tumultuous period of corruption, civil unrest, media suppression and widespread blight and economic collapse.

Pence, along with the other 15 nations at the eighth Summit of the Americas, called on Venezuela to hold free and transparent presidential elections in which all political parties are allowed to participate.

Prior to the summit, Pence also met with members of the Venezuelan opposition, showing a sign of significant support in addition to the US pledging some $16 million for the displaced refugees that are fleeing the country to other Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Most notably, Pence met with Julio Borges, a Venezuelan opposition lawmaker and former speaker of the National Assembly; David Smolansky, former mayor of the city of El Hatillo; Carlos Vecchio, political coordinator of the Popular Will party he co-founded with opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez; and Antonio Ledezma, former mayor of Caracas, AFP reported.
