Yoon cites preemptive strike as option to deal with N.K. threat
All News 17:39 January 11, 2022 Yonhap News Agency

SEOUL, Jan. 11 (Yonhap) -- Main opposition presidential candidate Yoon Suk-yeol said Tuesday a preemptive strike is the only way to deal with a scenario of North Korea attacking South Korea with a nuclear-tipped missile.

Yoon made the comment hours after North Korea fired a suspected ballistic missile into the East Sea in its second projectile launch in less than a week.

"If a missile of over Mach 5 is launched, and if it is carrying a nuclear weapon, the time it will take to reach the capital area and commit a massacre is under a minute. It's practically impossible to intercept," the People Power Party nominee said during a New Year's press conference held at a cafe in eastern Seoul.

"In that case, when there is an indication, there is no other option to block it at the moment except through a preemptive strike with the Kill-Chain, which is at the forefront of the three-axis system," he said, referring to the Kill-Chain preemptive strike platform.

"Gaffe a day Yoon" as he is known, has lost his lead in presidential campaign polling in South Korea for the March 9, 2022 election. He has fallen behind the democratic party candidate Lee Jae-myung anywhere from 2 to 11 points depending on which poll one reads. His support has dropped about ten percent roughly. The problem for democrats is that Lee's support seems to be stalled, and support lost by Yoon has all accrued to another conservative candidate Ahn Chul-su, whose People's Party, is distinct from the main conservative opposition party, the so called People's Power Party. which Yoon represents. Yoon has no prior foreign policy or electoral experience having been a career prosecutor with a checkered reputation who allegedly ran a vindictive and politicized office. He is the former Prosecutor General of South Korea who left office after being disciplined for professional misconduct. Beside his consistent gaffes during the campaign, ongoing investigations or prosecutions of his family members have contributed to his declining popularity. Some of his official actions as prosecutor are being investigated by the new office to investigate crimes of high government officials but currently these are not expected to reach any definitive determinations before the election.

There has been recent discussion of whether or not Ahn Chul-su would make a better unified candidate for both conservative parties. Recent polling suggests that if Ahn Chul-su became the unified PPP candidate he would defeat the democratic candidate Lee Jae-myung in the early March election of the next president of South Korea.
