Netanyahu Mulls Revoking Residency of Palestinians Beyond E. Jerusalem Separation Barrier

Source: Haaretz

The prime minister raised the possibility at a recent security cabinet meeting; ministers note the 'dramatic political implications' of the measure.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu raised the possibility of revoking the Israeli residency of some East Jerusalem Palestinians during a recent security cabinet meeting, according to sources in the prime minister's bureau.

The remarks, which were made at one of the meetings convened two weeks ago to discuss the escalating violence in East Jerusalem, referred to Palestinians residing beyond the separation barrier. The prime minister said that the possibility of revoking their resident status should be considered, and called for a separate meeting to discuss the matter. The comments were first reported by Channel 2 journalist Amit Segal.

Officials in the prime minister's bureau said that during the cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said the Palestinians in those neighborhoods do not fulfill the duties of Israeli residents but do enjoy the rights that the State of Israel gives them. He further noted that there is no law enforcement in those areas.

A source who took part in the meeting told Haaretz that the ministers in attendance were surprised by Netanyahu's remarks, but a discussion did not ensue. "There is no such process to revoke the residency or citizenship of thousands of people," the source said.

Israel to mark 20th anniversary of Rabin murder

Finally, the main rally commemorating the assassination will take place on Saturday night at Rabin Square in Tel Aviv. President Rivlin will open the ceremony, followed by former US President Bill Clinton, who was president of the United States when the assassination took place, and a close friend of Rabin.

Clinton, in a roundtable with bloggers today on the sidelines of the Clinton Global Initiative in New York, gave an extensive recounting of the deterioration in the Middle East peace process since he pressed both parties to agree to a final settlement at Camp David in 2000. He said there are two main reasons for the lack of a comprehensive peace today: the reluctance of the Netanyahu administration to accept the terms of the Camp David deal and a demographic shift in Israel that is making the Israeli public less amenable to peace.

"The two great tragedies in modern Middle Eastern politics, which make you wonder if God wants Middle East peace or not, were [Yitzhak] Rabin‘s assassination and [Ariel] Sharon‘s stroke," Clinton said.

Sharon had decided he needed to build a new centrist coalition, so he created the Kadima party and gained the support of leaders like Tzipi Livni and Ehud Olmert. He was working toward a consensus for a peace deal before he fell ill, Clinton said. But that effort was scuttled when the Likud party returned to power.

Israel's ability to play the victim and extract sympathy will be greatly reduced when the Palestinians stop throwing rocks and simply demand the right to vote, after Abbas dies and the PA dissolves.

racist, backwards, rightwing government this year.

Israel doesn't get to brag about being a democracy and then pretend the hideous people governing it got there by accident.

And every poll of Israelis shows the same nationalistic, racist streak.

And beginning to lose effect completely.

There already is a poster in this group that has such OTT posts on Israel and Jews that nobody takes them seriously at all anymore from either side .

That's the risk with recurrent OTT posts ...

Yours are not there yet.

Once the Palestinians show they want peace, there's no question the Israeli populace would vote more leftwing.

It's happened twice before - when Rabin won over Shamir, and when Barak won over Bibi. The Israeli public believed the Palestinians wanted peace, so they threw the rightwingers out - twice.
