Romney pleases Christian group with stance on Israel

Romney, speaking to the Faith and Freedom Coalition, accuses Obama of being more afraid of Israeli military action against Iran than of Iran's suspected nuclear program.

<snip>

"In hawkish remarks that drew cheers from an audience of religious conservatives, Mitt Romney accused President Obama on Saturday of being more afraid of Israel attacking Iran than of Iran developing a nuclear weapon.

The Republican presidential candidate, who frequently attacks the administration for failing to back Israel's government more aggressively, escalated his criticism a notch. He responded with ridicule when asked what he would do, if elected, to strengthen U.S. relations with the Jewish state.

"I think, by and large, you can just look at the things the president has done and do the opposite," Romney said, to laughter and applause from members of the Faith and Freedom Coalition, an evangelical Christian political organization.

"You look at his policies with regards to Iran," Romney continued. "He's almost sounded like he's more frightened that Israel might take military action than he's concerned that Iran might become nuclear."

... Is it sick because he defends Israel's right to defend itself or because he's getting votes by defending that right?

My Democratic Party has a decision to make here -- if they continue to throw pro-Israel Democrats like Steve Rothman (D-NJ) under the bus they risk losing life-time Jewish Democrats to the Republicans.

Republican groups criticize Obama on Iran and Israel as the 2012 US presidential race heats up

<snip>

"The National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) on Tuesday derided a novel theory about the Holocaust put forth in a campaign ad by Samuel Wurzelbacher, aka “Joe the Plumber,” who is running for Congress in Ohio.

In Wurzelbach’s video, released Monday, the Republican candidate blamed the Holocaust and the Armenian genocide on gun control laws.

“In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were exterminated,” it says. “In 1939, Germany established gun control. From 1939 to 1945, six million Jews and seven million others unable to defend themselves were exterminated.”

The ad shows Wurzelbacher at a shooting range firing a shotgun at fruits and vegetables. At the end of the clip, the 2008 election icon says, “I love America.”

NJDC President and CEO David A. Harris quickly pounced on the video.

“Using the memories of the six million Jews killed in the Holocaust to make a political point is never appropriate, under any circumstances,” he said."
