Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (or should I say Bib E. Coyote?) had a lot of people worldwide holding their stomachs with laughter as he held his Looney Tune ACME bomb above the UNGA podium. The Israeli meme artists, as usual, were quick to respond.

(1,418 posts)over on the twitter that Bibi's "atomic bomb" diagram was drawn by Boris Badenoff from
the Rock and Bullwinkle Show.
Unreal. he's getting nowhere with Obama... and rightfully so.

And the bomb chart.
For some reason it makes me think of Eastwood's schtick, the use of feeble props I guess, so old school in the day of PowerPoint(R).

(2,506 posts)Now if he would only fess up to having an atomic bomb and the world would set a red line for Israel (already crossed) that would be great!

(58,724 posts)The first map labels all these areas in green as "Palestinian land" in 1946 - but this was not at all true. In fact, all of the land was occupied at that time and controlled by the British.
To say that there was "Palestinian land" and "Jewish land" (not "Israeli land" but "Jewish land" is to render those terms as meaningless.
And, as most people know, the second map represents a proposal that was rejected by the Arab side - this configuration never actually existed.
This second map was how the colonial powers wished to divide Palestine between a "Jewish" and "Arab" state.
In the third map, there is a shift from "Jewish land" as a heading to "Israeli land" - but, there are actually lots of Palestinians who live in the white area. In fact, there were (and are) many Palestinian Israeli citizens.
Whereas the area in green was not "Palestinian land" by any definition between 1949-1967. The areas in green were, in fact, controlled by Jordan and Egypt.

(45,850 posts)A few people commented that it looked as though it were drawn by Acme Cartoons and that it should have had the word BOOM!! drawn across it in red letters.
Netanyahu followed up by taking out a red marker and drawing a thick line at the 90 percent line i.e., *this* was where the red line had to be drawn. Or else!
But even as people jeered on Twitter at the cartoonish diagram, Buzzfeeds Zeke Miller suggested that Bibis buffoonery might have disguised a clever tactic. Who, now, remembers the speech Mahmoud Abbas gave less than one hour earlier?

well I don't know about the Abbas theory but it certainly has gotten attention

(90,061 posts)Haaretz had a story about Bibi and Lieberman's "fury" about Abbas' speech.
I don't know what I think about the distraction idea, skeptical, but not sure it's wrong. It seems un-Bibi-like somehow, but I can't say how. His manner (Bibi) when he gave his speech bothers me, he seemed almost jovial.

(45,850 posts)would be taken the way it was, he is I am sure no stranger to Warner Brothers cartoons as he spent a good deal of time in the US something backed up by his English which has an American accent and perhaps what could be called a presentation that had a humor angle to it was his method of showmanship, it all depends on presentation too

(58,724 posts)And I think his diagram was one of the stupider things he (or his people) has come up with.
In his mind, though, he believes by getting a "red line" he is helping to prevent WWIII.

(90,061 posts)It seemed obvious to me that he was not taking it too seriously, like Eastwood and his chair. But we will wait and see what comes next.

(45,850 posts)but I think at home that Netanyahu doesn't exactly have the Israeli military establishment 100% on board with a military strike on Iran either not to mentiomn the Israeli public and Bibi is up for re-election soon too

(90,061 posts)I think Bibi's agenda now is domestic butt-covering, so I agree with that, but waiting for more evidence. Meanwhile, the reason for the necessity of domestic butt-covering was that he got stuffed by Obama and internationally, or anyway, that's my theory pending further input. Getting stuffed does not look good domestically, esp. getting stuffed by Obama. So yeah.
