Palestinians Say Israeli Soldiers Shoot, Kill Teen At West Bank Separation Barrier

By Associated Press, Updated: Tuesday, January 15, 11:39 AM

RAMALLAH, West Bank — The Israeli military shot dead a 17-year-old Palestinian near the West Bank separation barrier on Tuesday, Palestinians said. The Israeli military said he had breached the barrier, which separated soldiers from protesters.

A classmate said a group of students threw rocks at soldiers near the barrier, a line of walls, trenches and fences Israel has built along and inside the West Bank. Muataz Awad said soldiers opened fire, killing Samir Awad from the village of Boudrous.

The military confirmed opening fire at protesters, saying some had cut through a section of the barrier fence. Military spokesman Capt. Eytan Buchman said troops “initiated standard rules of engagement, which included live fire.” An investigation into the shooting has been ordered, and Buchman said he could not comment further on the open-fire order.

Also Tuesday, about 50 armed Palestinians shut the main road leading into the Balata refugee camp with burning tires to protest repeated attempts by Palestinian security forces to disarm them.

Very unfortunate that this person was killed.

That said, throwing rocks at soldiers is probably an ill-advised action.

It must be a terrible thing to live in fear of oppression like that.

Sixteen year-old Sameer Awwad from Budrus was killed Tuesday by IDF soldiers near the separation barrier at his village. Awwad, who was shot at least three times, is the fourth Palestinian civilian who has been shot to death this week while coming close or trying to cross an Israeli fence. According to reports, none of them posed any risk to Israeli soldiers or civilians.

According to eyewitnesses, Sameer was walking away from light clashes that had erupted by the barrier when he was shot from the back with three bullets from a distance of about 100 meters. One bullet hit his leg, another hit the back of his neck and exited near his eyebrow, and the third entered his rib cage and exited through his chest. Awwad was immediately transferred to Ramallah Hospital, where he was pronounce dead shortly after.

The village of Budrus received worldwide recognition for the non-violent struggle it conducted against the confiscation of its land for the construction of the separation barrier (later documented in the film Budrus).

Over the last few days, three other Palestinians have been killed in the vicinity of Israeli separation barriers. Anwar al-Mamlouk, 21, was killed last Friday in Gaza, near the barrier in Jabalya. On Saturday, Oudai Darwish from Dura near Hebron was killed in the South Hebron Hills, when trying to cross the barrier to find work in Israel. Darwish was shot at least four times, twice in his legs and twice in the upper part of his body.

Sounds like he was used for sport.

"...shot from the back with three bullets from a distance of about 100 meters."

And cowardly sport at that.

Those IDF soldiers must have been in fear of their lives.
