Related: About this forumNetanyahu steps up demands, wants settlers to remain in Palestinian state
http://972mag.com/netanyahu-steps-up-up-demands-wants-settlers-to-remain-in-palestinian-state/86366/A couple of statements from Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu are adding to the confusion over the kind of solution he envisions, if he supports one at all.
Answering a question from a reporter in Davos regarding the possible evacuation of Jordan Valley settlements Israel seeks to keep IDF forces along the Jordan River even after any withdrawal Netanyahu said that he wouldnt uproot a single Israeli as part of a peace deal.
Haaretz, which was the first to report the comment, used caution, allowing readers to understand that Netanyahu might have referred to the settlements in the Jordan Valley, and not the evacuation of any settlement. Yesterday (Sunday), however, Israel Hayom, which keeps its reporting in line with the prime ministers spin at all times, used the broad interpretation, allowing readers to understand that Netanyahu will not forcefully evacuate settlers regardless of their location.
Later that day came a sort of explanation, when a source in the Prime Ministers Office, who spoke on condition of anonymity but on the record, told the Israeli media that Netanyahu would like settlers to have the option to remain in the settlements after the establishment of a Palestinian state. The source didnt explain what arrangement Netanyahu envisioned for the settlers: whether they would remain under Israeli control or accept Palestinian sovereignty.

I find it appalling that PM Netanyahu would consider;
1) that anybody finds this latest nonsense in any way truthful,
2) that anybody believes that he would give up on the settlers he has tacitly supported for so long,
3) that the Palestinians would accept the settlers as citizens...seeing how they have invaded the West Bank for years.
This is about Israel's responsibility to act like a democracy.
The Settlers are Israeli citizens, and Israel should remove them to inside Israel proper and stop with this continued nonsense.

What will be his next ruse?
Sadly, his ruse is to say that the Palestinians are anti-Semites.
"See, look! The Palestinians won't let 500k illegal Israeli citizens to stay indefinitely! Anti-Semites!"
What a horrible strategy. All the Palestinians have to say is "no, you invaded our little chunk of land. Fekk off!
The Palestinians could also play the game, but I don't believe they should, by saying, "Okay, we'll keep these 500k Israelis...now to be called Palestinians, and you can welcome back in the 720k Palestinians including offspring that were pushed out during the Nakba.
Fair's fair."
It's a stupid game to play on either side, but the Palestinians have at least ROR whereas the illegal Israelis are just illegal.

(45,850 posts)2. IMO Bibi is attempting to legitimize Lieberman's demand that Israeli-Arabs
be forcibly transferred to a Palestinian State by hoping that the outcry or refusal to accept Jewish Israeli settlers as citizens will justify Israel doing the reverse

(12,606 posts)6. Doing that would be a continuation of
the Nakba, and it would be a PR disaster for Bibi: showing how Israel is not really a Democracy. The USA could not support such a move, but since most of our politicians seem to have lost the ability to respect human rights they might jyst ignore it for a while.

They vaguely remember something or other. It reminds me of the British woman sitting next to me on the plane when I was wearing my Free Palestine t-shirt and she looked at it and started talking about the conflict and within the first two sentences told me she always got confused and thought it was the Palestinians occupying the Israelis. At least she admitted she was confused...
