Israel vows 'lengthy' offensive in Gaza

Israeli air force launches 50 airstrikes, after at least 20 rockets were fired from Gaza.

Gregg Carlstrom Last updated: 08 Jul 2014

The Israeli army has promised a “lengthy” offensive against Hamas, after a fresh wave of airstrikes against Gaza and a salvo of dozens of rockets fired from the strip into southern Israel.

Palestinians told Al Jazeera that eight people were injured in the Israeli strikes on Tuesday morning, one of which reportedly targeted the house of a senior member of the Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas.

The bombings came after at least 20 rockets were fired from Gaza. No injuries or damage were reported.

Overnight, the air force carried out some 50 airstrikes in the besieged territory, and on Tuesday Moshe Ya’alon, the defence minister, said the current campaign in Gaza would be lengthy.

In 2004, the UK House of Lords delivered a judgment in A & Others and X & Others v. Secretary of State for Home Affairs case, in what is regarded as one of the most important decisions issued by an English court in more than 50 years.

The court held that there was no "state of public emergency threatening the life of the nation", which may have justified derogating from protecting fundamental rights. The court further described indefinite detention contained in "anti-terror laws as the stuff of nightmares, associated with France before and during the revolution, with Soviet Russia in the Stalinist era".

Almost a decade later, on June 26, the UN Human Rights Council deliberated on the situation in Palestine and other Arab-occupied territories. During the deliberations, the council issued a warning to Israel that there may be serious repercussions as a result of its campaign against the Palestinian people, which constituted a continuing violation of international humanitarian law, following the abduction of three Israeli teenagers.

On June 12, three Israeli teenagers, Naftali Fraenkel, Eyal Yifrach and Gil-ad Shaar, went missing. On June 30, their bodies were found in Hebron under a pile of rocks. Israel has blamed Hamas for the murders, whereas Hamas has denied any responsibility.

seven Palestinians including two children were killed and about 25 wounded in an attack on a house in the Khan Younis area in south Gaza.

Residents said the house belonged to the family of a Hamas member and the casualties occurred when the property came under attack for the second time.

After the first strike people had gathered on the roof of the house as "human shields", hoping their presence would deter a second strike, the residents said. The Israeli military made no immediate comment about the incident."

11. first off I find your Iraq claim interesting to say the least
Tue Jul 8, 2014, 05:05 PM
Jul 2014

as Israel's unilateral bombing Osirak happened in 1981 yet Sadam did not hesitate to shower Israel with scuds 10 years later in 1991 sort of rendering your statement about Iraq questionable unless of course your claiming that the US's 2003 invasion was on Israel's behalf?

for some reason Israel was willing to sign peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan

Lebanon is also interesting Israel withdrew in 2006 after kiling 1000+ Lebanese civilians because it could not bear the losses to it's own which totaled around 10-12% of the losses Lebanon took and has not seemed too anxious to go back for some reason, even after what could be called provocation from the Lebanese side

and finally Syria- Assad held Syria in check we'll have to wait see what happens should he lose, albeit Israel did bomb Syria killing 10 Syrian army regulars after a missile from Syria killed an Israeli boy, it did so with no evidence as to which side fired the missile as both sides are in the area it came from

Closed-circuit cameras have always been part of Israel's high-tech approach to security, but in recent months, the presence of cameras and Palestinians' use of cell phones have come back to haunt the Israeli security establishment.

A security camera perched on top of the store owned by Hussein Abu Khdeir provided key evidence in the kidnapping and murder of his son Mohammed, showing the Israelis involved and the car in which they abducted him. It was a cell phone camera that captured Israeli policemen beating Mohammed's subdued 15-year-old Palestinian-American cousin, Tariq, who was visiting Jerusalem, on vacation from Tampa, Florida.

A month ago, Israeli officials and spokesmen were caught off guard on May 15, when a security camera atop a carpentry shop captured Israeli soldiers' unprovoked shooting of two Palestinian school boys in the Beitunia area. Israeli officials, believing that there were no cameras at the site, claimed that the soldiers had not used live bullets and that those shot with rubber bullets had been throwing stones at soldiers. Autopsies and the security camera exposed their attempts to falsify reality.
