Horror as Gaza handicapped care facility bombed

GAZA CITY (AFP) -- Twenty-year-old Palestinian Sally Saqr lies in a hospital bed in Gaza's Shifa hospital with burns that have turned her cheeks an angry pink beneath her ventilation tube.

She survived an Israeli strike in the early hours of Saturday morning that hit a care home for Palestinians with special needs.

Two of her fellow residents were not so lucky.

Thirty-year-old Ola Washahi and 47-year-old Suha Abu Saada were killed when the rocket slammed into the home, destroying it.

Gaza City, Gaza Strip: Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip killed 52 people Saturday, including two severely handicapped women in a care facility, medics said.

The toll made Saturday the bloodiest day yet in the five-day conflict, and hiked the overall toll to 157.

The deadliest strike came in the Tuffah district in eastern Gaza City, where 18 people were killed in strikes that hit a home and a mosque, emergency services spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said.

Among at least 50 people injured in the strike was Hamas police chief Tayseer al-Batsh, who was reportedly in critical condition.

Army plans to target areas from which long-range rockets are fired; residents will be asked to evacuate

Yoav Zitun, Ron Ben-Yishai
Latest Update: 07.12.14

While Hamas was firing rockets at the Tel Aviv area on Saturday night, the IDF was planning to evacuate civilians from areas in the northern Gaza Strip before mounting a "significant attack" there to root out long-range rockets and the terrorists firing them.

A senior IDF official said that "in the next few hours, in light of the fact Hamas is hiding behind civilians, we will change patterns of action and start evacuating Palestinian civilians in the northern Gaza Strip, where long-range rockets are fired from."

These civilians, the official said, will receive messages asking them to evacuate. These messages will also tell them terrorists were operating among them.

"Following the evacuation, there will be a significant attack there," he noted.

NABLUS, West Bank

An Israeli settler died early Sunday when his car rammed into barricades in the West Bank city of Nablus after being hurled by stones.

The settler's vehicle overturned and hit barricades when Palestinian protesters pelted stones at Israeli vehicles in southern Nablus, eyewitnesses said.

Fierce clashes broke out between Palestinian protestors and Israeli forces, which used teargas canisters and gunfire to disperse the protesters.

Tension has been running high in the Palestinian territories since Israel launched a military offensive in the Gaza Strip with the stated aim of ending rocket fire from the strip.

Prediction is a fruitless enterprise once the guns start shooting, but it's hard to see this working out well for anybody. The potential for the violence to escalate and propagate is there for sure.

13. Israeli commandos make first ground incursion in Gaza
Sun Jul 13, 2014, 08:38 AM
Jul 2014
JERUSALEM (AFP) -- Israeli marines mounted a first ground assault on Gaza early Sunday, further escalating a deadly six-day offensive hours after the UN Security Council unanimously called for a ceasefire.

As world powers prepared to meet in Vienna over the escalating conflict, the Palestinian death toll from Israel's punishing air campaign hit 165 following the bloodiest day yet, which left 56 people dead.

So far, no Israelis have been killed, although militants in Gaza have pounded the south and center of the country with more than 630 rockets since the fighting began on July 8, as Israel and Hamas militants faced off in the biggest confrontation since 2012.

Overnight, Israeli naval commandos raided the northern Gaza Strip on a mission to destroy longer-range rockets, dozens of which have been fired at cities as far away as Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Hadera in the north, sending tens of thousands fleeing for cover.

14. Alleged collaborator 'executed' in Gaza City
Sun Jul 13, 2014, 08:52 AM
Jul 2014
GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- An alleged collaborator with Israel was executed by Palestinian fighters in Gaza City on Sunday, local sources said.

Witnesses in the southern city of Rafah reported seeing gunmen killing a man in the middle of the street in what appeared to be the execution of someone suspected of collaborating with Israel.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility from any of Gaza's armed factions.

Israel often relies on collaborators to carry out military attacks and assassinations.

15. It's time for Israel to seek a cease-fire in Gaza
Sun Jul 13, 2014, 09:34 AM
Jul 2014
GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- When their next-door neighbors received a "warning call" from Israel to evacuate a home in Jabaliya refugee camp, Yousef Qandil and his son Anas fled their property, fearing that they could be killed or injured by shrapnel.

Both men took refuge under a tree near the site, awaiting the imminent airstrike which they expected to hit the house, or neighboring properties.

Yousef had already sent his wife and younger children to their parents' house to protect them from harm.

Moments later, both Yousef and Anas were killed in an airstrike that targeted a group of Gazans sheltering under a tree for protection.

18. "The number keeps rising": Dr. Mona El-Farra on Gaza assault
Sun Jul 13, 2014, 10:04 AM
Jul 2014

Dr. Mona El-Farra: Today, in Gaza, the drones are still in the sky, the jet fighters are still in the sky, gunboats or warships are still hitting Gaza with missiles. The streets of Gaza are really empty — people are afraid to leave their homes because of the intensity of the shelling. Hundreds of thousands of children are in their homes, terrified, tired, skittish, anxious, clinging to their parents because they are afraid of the shelling. And as you know, we don’t have shelters in Gaza, so just people are trying to be in their homes, trying to be in the most safest place inside their homes. This is one thing.

Another thing — Israel has destroyed more than 210 homes until this minute and the number is increasing. And they give very short notice — just ten minutes to the family to leave their home. Those ten minutes and then no home — no memories, no history, nothing. Just get out of the house even without any papers, documents to see who you are, any official documents.

The number of the injured has reached 659 up to this minute, the number keeps increasing. The number of killed is 105. At least forty are women and children. Hospitals are working under great pressure because of a severe shortage of medication and supplies, especially the emergency needs for the operating theaters. And of course the problem of the electricity continues. We don’t have power. We don’t have internet and power most of the time. A feeling of insecurity is the case. No place is safe.

I’d like to share something with you — two things. First thing, on a personal level, I have had to leave my apartment because all the windows were shattered, and my place is just in front of the sea and it was very very unsafe. I was too close to the bombardment. So I moved to a friend’s house to see if it was safer than our place. No place is safe. This is one thing.

Another thing — one friend of mine, she was expecting her baby. She was supposed to come to Gaza [City], to her doctor to have the baby, but she couldn’t — there’s no transportation between towns and villages. No public transportation, of course, and even the private taxis are afraid to go from one place to another, because of the intensity of the shelling. So she had to give birth to the baby in another place, but she was so anxious, and because of that, she hemorrhaged badly. This is from one day — the tension, the stress can do that. But she’s okay now. She gave birth to the baby.

What I’m trying to tell you, Nora — imagine yourself as a mother, expecting mother, that needs all the good circumstances to give birth, and thinking all of the time of being unsafe while going to the hospital. This is what I’m trying to let you know. She gave birth to a baby girl. She’s okay now. I telephoned her and found out she’s okay.

The situation is very bad and it can lead to more escalation and the ground operation is imminent, despite that they keep postponing it. And this again puts the population in a feeling of insecurity — when are they going to hit? When are they going to enter Gaza?

This is the general situation. But also, there is a great deal of social solidarity between people, and steadfastness. Because we went through this several times. You cannot get used to the ugly feeling of war. But still, there is strength inside Palestinian people at the moment. Strength — I don’t know how to put this feeling into words. Two feelings — you are afraid, you are insecure, but there is something strong inside you. This is the situation at the moment.

I think I have mentioned the hospitals and the medication, the shortage, lack of medication and supplies, there is another thing — the situation is dire. An increasing number of families are impoverished because of the lack of cash, lack of money, it’s Ramadan. The Israeli army as well has hit many water wells inside Gaza. And this morning there has been water cuts — no water in many neighborhoods because the water wells have been hit.

UNRWA has opened its schools to receive homeless people in case of the military ground [invasion], and on this level, I am satisfied that some of the homeless families will have access to Middle East Children’s Alliance’s water purification systems.

So this is the situation in general, and I can’t see any ceasefire in the near future.
