BERLIN (JTA) Following a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Berlin on Thursday at which participants chanted anti-Jewish slogans, the American Jewish Committee Berlin office filed a complaint with police.
According to a press statement, marchers chanted, Jew, Jew,cowardly pig, come on out and fight.
Deidre Berger, director of the AJCs Berlin office, wrote an open letter to the members of the German Bundestag calling on them to be vigilant in protecting Jewish citizens. Police should crack down on such threats to show that anti-Semitism has no place in our society.
The danger of uncontrolled demonstrations was made clear last week in Paris, when violent protesters trapped Jews inside a synagogue and chanted such slogans as Hitler was right and Death to Jews. In Germany, such expressions are illegal and not protected by free-speech laws.

a member of any of the peoples who speak or spoke a Semitic language, including in particular the Jews and Arabs.
ORIGIN from modern Latin Semita, via late Latin from Greek Sēm Shem, son of Noah in the Bible, from whom these people were traditionally supposed to be descended.

A better source is a dictionary .
TexasProgresive
(12,157 posts)If you want to describe an act as anti-Jewish then call it anti-Jewish. The word Semite describes more than Jews. In fact if we could find the lost 10 tribes they would be Semites and they are not Jews (of Judah).
Speaking of the 10 lost tribes all of the rest of us may be descendants.

(14,851 posts)Don't have the energy to argue this bogus argument usually found in holacaust denial and extremist websites.
Suffice to say the definition of antisemite applies only to Jew hatred and thre isn't really a debate about it.
Period ....
The alternate "argument "is just absurd boring and extremist right wing garbage and in of itself antiSemitic .

(12,157 posts)from the 1991 Random House Webster's Dictionary-
2. a member of any of the peoples descended from Shem, the eldest son of Noah.
Semitic n 1. a family of languages, a branch of the Afro-asiatic family comprising a number of ancient and modern languages of SW Asia and Africa, as Akkadian, Aramaic, Hebrew, Arabic, and Amharic.
2. of or pertaining to the Semitic languages or their speakers.
So it's like, "All squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares and all rectangles are quadrangles but not all quadrangles are rectangles.
It is not anti-Jewish to say that Arabs are also Semites.

There ain't no argument about this.
Yes Arabs are Semites
Antisemite doesn't apply to Arabs unless it's an Arab Jew
End of argument

Your ignorance is beginning to look deliberate.

(12,157 posts)She inculcated in me to always look at the root meaning of words. Yes the word was coined by a German Judeophobe Wilhelm Marrs in the 19th century but his misuse of the word Semite has destroyed the meaning of Semite which does not exclusively refer to Jews.
cali
(114,904 posts)now. And she didn't teach you well, did she, as you were blathering about this BEFORE you even looked it up. Of course, semite doesn't refer exclusively to Jews. Yes, words are curious things. Is the word "drive" destroyed because a driveway is a place designated to park, not drive.
Your insistence about this- and umbrage- is creepy. ugh.
TexasProgresive
(12,157 posts)Enough said. There is plenty of hatred to go around without any group claiming to be more hated. On that note, I will let this rest. There can be no meeting of minds on this issue. This is a general symptom of America- we are all too invested in our beliefs.

(5,397 posts)And to you the word "anti-Semitic" somehow implies that Jews believe they are more hated than other groups? How does that work?
Well you've certainly illustrated that concept here.
Shaktimaan
(5,397 posts)We're not debating the definition of the word "Semite." The word under discussion is "anti-Semite." Which does not mean "against Semites" despite how it may seem.
Did you really think this word was invented to describe hatred of Semitic people though? Because that's ludicrous. When was the last time you heard of bigotry against "those lousy Semites?"
TexasProgresive
(12,157 posts)It appears to have been coined in the 19th century by a German writer, Wilhelm Marr in a pamphlet, "The Victory of Germandom over Jewry". It just seems ironic to me to claim this word as ones own when it was coined by the founder of the League of Antisemites, the first organization to use the term.
My guess is that Herr Marr did not know any other Semites but if there were Arabs important in the German economy he would've lumped them all together in his screed.
cali
(114,904 posts)word. YOU don't like that, so you're making shit up. And your guess about Marr is absurd. Ugh. It's silly to stick to this shit. It's hardly about Jews claiming "ownership.

The accepted definition of Anti-semite is anti jew.

(12,157 posts)but discrimination against other Semites such as Arabs is not anti-Semitism. There is a disconnect here.

(114,904 posts)No disconnect for anyone who understands a bit about language in general and the etymology of "anti-semitic" in particular. I suggest you do a bit of research.
sabbat hunter
(6,828 posts)that is the definition of the term.
The real disconnect is you not understanding a generally accepted definition of a word.
Check any dictionary under antisemitism. Look at the meaning listed.
cali
(114,904 posts)by StormFront types and anti-semites. And anti-semitic is a phrase that was coined as a more "acceptable and "scientific" term for jew hatred. That's its etymology. That's what it means. It does not mean hatred against all semites. It is not used that way by any reputable historian, sociologist, reporter or anyone else. sorry.

"Anti-semitism" has referred exclusively to anti-Jew discrimination for over a hundred years. Everyone knows this definition, and it doesn't reflect well on you when you play games like this.
