2014 a record breaking year for aliyah

Although Israel faced another war and tensions rose in Jerusalem, 2014 was a record-breaking year in terms of aliyah (immigration) statistics.

According to the end-of-year figures released on Wednesday by the Jewish Agency for Israel and the The Ministry of Immigrant Absorption, aliyah hit a 10-year high in 2014 – with the arrival of about 26,500 fresh immigrants.

The year 2014 saw a 32% increase in immigrants, compared to the approximately 20,000 immigrants that made aliyah to Israel in 2013. For the first time in Israel's history, France has topped the list of countries of origin for immigrants to Israel – 7,000 new immigrants from France arrived in Israel in 2014, more than twice as much as the 3,400 French immigrants who arrived last year.

Is Ariel expanding?
Yes, Ariel is expanding. Hundreds of new housing units have been constructed in Ariel in the last few years, mostly located in the eastern tip of the settlement (i.e., the settlement is expanding deeper into the West Bank, rather than towards the Green Line). Since 1990 Ariel's population has more than doubled, mainly as a result of immigration to the country from the former Soviet Union.

between being deported form a place where you are illegally residing, and being ethnically cleansed.

Apparently President Obama is a monster in your eyes, seeing as he "ethnically cleansed" one and a half million people in his first term. And that number is growing!

Dave, you have just dethroned "Ethnic cleansing is like affirmative action" as the second-dumbest thing I have ever seen a zionist say on DU. Although close, you weren't quite able to beat "Flotilla to Tibet," because that is pure comedy, while your statement underlines some kind of worrisome thoughts you seem to entertain. But still, second place isn't bad.

Speaking to reporters in the US he said, "After the experience of the last 44 years of military occupation and all the conflict and friction, I think it would be in the best interest of the two people to be separated."

Areikat made the statements after being asked about the rights of minorities in a future Palestinian state, USA Today reported. He declared that the PLO seeks a secular state, but that Palestinians need separation to work on their own national identity.

Later Wednesday, Palestinian Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud al-Habash dismissed Areikat's statements, saying that the Palestinian state is to welcome members of all faiths. He asserted that any media attempts to manipulate anti-Jewish statements are politically motivated.

He added that the Palestinian Authority and its ambassador to Washington have a clear stance on the matter.

Yesterday’s spectacle of far rightists at the tent protest visiting from their illegal settlements in the West Bank was significant because they were scuffling with fellow citizens, rather than their disenfranchised and discriminated Palestinian neighbors who they usually scuffle with. They brought their extremist politics to a turf filled with secular Jews, activists, anarchists, gays and transgenders, making them appear the odd ones out.

5. Exodus from France Leads Aliyah to 10-Year High
Fri Jan 2, 2015, 02:06 PM
Jan 2015

Immigration to Israel hit a 10-year high in 2014 with the arrival of approximately 26,500 new immigrants, 32 percent higher than last year’s 20,000 new “olim.”

France for the first time topped the list of countries of origin for immigrants, with nearly 7,000 Jews moving to Israel in 2014, double the 3,400 who came last year.

The other unusual rate of aliyah was from the Ukraine, from where 5,820 Jews moved to Israel, nearly three times the 2,020 who made aliyah in the previous year.

Jewish Agency Natan Sharansky chairman said, “2014 was a year of record-breaking Aliyah. This year also saw a historic shift: for the first time in Israel’s history, the number of immigrants who came to Israel from the free world is greater than that of immigrants fleeing countries in distress.
