Abbas seeks to re-submit statehood bid to UN Security Council

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said on Sunday he was discussing with Jordan plans to resubmit to the United Nations Security Council a resolution calling for the establishment of a Palestinian state that failed to win enough votes last week.

Jordan remains a member of the Security Council while several other countries with revolving membership were replaced over the New Year.

The Palestinians hope these states will be more sympathetic to their resolution demanding an Israeli withdrawal from occupied territories and independence by 2017, although the veto-wielding United States would be all but certain to vote 'No' again, as it did on Dec. 30.

But any resubmission would face almost certain failure. The US has veto power as one of the council's five permanent members and has pledged to block Abbas's plan, calling it one-sided and unproductive.

If anything, if Abbas was a statesman, he should go to the funerals and mourn the victims to show not only solidarity with their loss but also to show he will not tolerate such acts by cowards who do not represent Islam.

President Mahmoud Abbas expressed on Saturday solidarity with France in face of recent terror attacks, stressing that 'terrorism that has no religion.'

Speaking over the phone with his French counterpart Francois Hollande, Abbas expressed his grief and sorrow over the terrorist acts that have recently hit France, the country of freedoms and coexistence, claiming the French innocent lives.

'At this solemn moment of tragedy our hearts and minds are with you in the face of terrorism that has no religion,” said Abbas, and added: “The entire Palestinian people are pained by what has taken place.”

Abbas expressed his firm belief that “Islam is innocent from these criminal acts” and that “confronting violence, racism and hatred requires the broadest possible cooperation in various aspects, including deepening the dialogue among religions and cultures.”

Abbas condemned all terrorist actions that claim innocent lives, whether they are Christians, Jews, Muslims or followers of other religions, stressing the sacredness of human life.

Thanking Abbas for expressing solidarity, Hollande stressed the importance for the French people to receive such a message of solidarity at this affliction, which he said, would not affect the values of liberty, justice and democracy safeguarded by his country.

Hamas condemns Charlie Hebdo attack

Gaza City (Palestinian Territories) (AFP) - Palestinian Islamist group Hamas condemned Saturday the killing of 12 people in an attack on French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo's offices by two French Islamists.

A statement in French said Hamas "condemns the attack against Charlie Hebdo magazine and insists on the fact that differences of opinion and thought cannot justify murder."

It also rejected Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's comments, in which he compared the Paris attack to Hamas firing rockets from the Gaza Strip at civilians in Israel.

"Hamas condemns the desperate attempts by ... Netanyahu to make a connection between our movement and the resistance of our people on the one hand and global terrorism on the other," it said.

guess that it is a start.

Now if they would stop building missals their words would be more believable.
