(23,311 posts)I'm gay, and I've lived in Sacramento all my life.
I will be honest and say that I was very put off by much of Steve Hansen's political campaign material. It was crude populism to tout that he should be supported because he will forgo the cell phone, parking, and other petty benefits of being a city councilperson. Not everyone makes the salary of a lobbyist, and being a city councilperson doesn't exactly pay very much - I think it's fine that there are these additional benefits that might make it more attractive to a working person that wants to run for office.
Steve might have had a political evolution from years ago, but he has struck me as definitely right-of-center of "fiscal issues." He once in a meeting argued against Proposition 47, a schools bond act, because he said we "cannot afford it." This put him in the company of the political right, and I was more than a little taken aback by the line of argument as we faced cash-starved education facilities in dire need of maintenance.
I will keep an open mind. But, so far, the campaign material has left me distinctly unimpressed. I've heard Joe Yee speak, and he doesn't set off fireworks, but he is modest and strikes me as personally unambitious. I appreciate those qualities.
