Disney Channel featured its first same-sex couple in a show this week

Sunday night proved to be a big moment in the movement toward equality. As Macklemore and Ryan Lewis and Mary Lambert and Madonna performed "Same Love" at the Grammys, Queen Latifah officiated 33 marriages marriages, some of which were (obviously) for gay and lesbian couples. Meanwhile, on the Disney Channel, a new episode of Good Luck Charlie marked the first time that a same-sex couple made an appearance on channel.

In the episode, Charlie's parents, Bob and Amy, are surprised when their daughter's new friend from preschool arrives at the house for a playdate with both of her moms, played by Desi Lydic and Lilli Birdsell. Back in June, Disney announced its intention to take the small step toward equality with an official statement to TV Guide.

But Disney Channel understands the groundbreaking nature of featuring a same-sex couple on one of its sitcoms and took extra care in crafting the episode. "This particular storyline was developed under the consultancy of child development experts and community advisors," a Disney Channel spokesperson says. "Like all Disney Channel programming, it was developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness."

Disney Channel already tested the waters last year with its on-air social outreach campaign "Make Your Mark." In one segment, a teen with two moms was featured, a move that was called a "big step forward" by GLAAD.
