Dallas police release description of suspect who tagged 11 sites with '666' in anti-gay hate crime

Dallas police announced Thursday they have video of a suspect who used red spray paint to tag 11 sites with “666? in an apparent anti-gay hate crime last weekend.

Authorities don’t plan to release the grainy video, taken from a surveillance camera 100 yards away, until they’ve enhanced it. But they said the footage shows a young white male about 6 feet tall traveling on a mountain bike and wearing khaki cargo shorts, a black shirt or jacket and a black baseball cap.

The suspect tagged sites including the Legacy of Love Monument in the heart of the city’s gay district, the predominantly LGBT Cathedral of Hope megahurch; Youth First, an agency that serves LGBTQ youth; and newspaper boxes belonging to the gay publication Dallas Voice. The suspect also tagged Dallas City Hall, the Dallas County-owned building that houses the Sixth Floor Museum, and the offices of The Dallas Observer, The Dallas Morning News and D magazine.

Rafael McDonnell, a spokesman for Resource Center, Dallas’ LGBT community center, said even the sites that aren’t gay-specific have ties to the community. For example, both the city and county issued LGBT Pride proclamations last month, and the Dallas Morning News recently launched an LGBT blog. And as I mentioned before, the Dallas Observer shares its building with Caven Enterprises, which owns the city’s largest gay nightclubs.
