24 years together. But like the couple in NC, once we return home our marriage will not be recognized in the state where we live.

as yet in NC but hopefully that will change in the near future.
I wish you and your wife to be much happiness. After 24 years together I would assume you have a head start on the happiness thing.

That may seem like a little thing, but to me it's not. Every time I go to a doctor, fill out an insurance form or one of the thousands of forms folks have to fill out over the course of their everyday lives, there it is. There's always a section that asks you for your marital status -- single, married, widowed, divorced and OTHER (explain). 24 years of checking "other" and having to write out an explanation of the relationship I have with my lovely wife of nearly a quarter century, then watching the receptionists snicker or make joking comments amongst themselves, none too softly. My wife doesn't deserve that kind of disrespect. It's just a minor thing but one among the litany of dehumanizing things you have to put up with, day after day.

We live in WV, which I doubt will recognize gay marriage before NC. On the other hand, the way NC politics have been gong of late, who knows?
