"Fantastic Beasts 2" will be very interesting.

They are also looking for actors between 16 and 18 to portray both Gellert Grindelwald and Albus Dumbledore as teenagers.

It will be interesting to see how close they stay to the lore. Teenage Albus Dumbledore had romantic feelings for teenage Gellert Grindelwald but the love went unrequited. So they became just platonic friends.

Will the filmmakers dare to incorporate this? The good boy falling in love with the bad boy, only to realize that they will never be more than friends?
Will they cut this out for fear of controversy?
Would it bloat the story too much and take away screen-time from other parts of the story?

And don't forget "Chekov's Gun": If you introduce an element into a story, it must eventually play a role.
If Movie-Teenage-Dumbledore has romantic feelings for Movie-Teenage-Grindelwald, then there must be a point in the "Fantastic Beasts 2"-plot where these feelings become relevant. The storyline would have to hinge on the detail that LOVE is involved, not just friendship. That could actually make the whole plot so complicated that the writers will just discard this element, simply to streamline the script into a coherent story.

If they don't mention it, the Potter-fans will be pissed.
If they mention it once but it doesn't play a role, that will lead to a bad script and moviegoers will be pissed.
If they mention it and it DOES play a role, then Warner Brothers has a controversy on hand.

My guess is option 2: A token homosexual romance, blink and you'll miss it, and people will ignore the bad plot because it's a Harry Potter-movie. People will watch this movie no matter how bad it is. (The plot of Star Wars Episode VII was also crap, but people loved the movie because it's Star Wars.)
